Ancient Stones - Avenues, Passage Graves, Circles, and Single Stone Sites

France

Recently, I have spent some time looking for Ancient Stone Sites in France. I was surprised to find how many locations there were.

There are Menhirs (single stones), Dolmens (passage graves), Alignments (rows), Tumulus (mounds), Alle-couverte (a rectangular chambered tomb with no passage or mound), and Cromlechs (stone circles).

Some I was able to find quite easily, thanks to maps and signs that led me right to them. Others were a little more difficult to find.

Sadly, for me, were the sites I could not find or I did not have time to try to visit. What you see here is probably less then 1/10th of all the sites in France, and especially Brittany.

Enjoy the photographs of the found.

Grand Menhir Brise, Locmariaquer, Morbihan, Brittany

If this stone was whole and standing, it would be the tallest known standing stone in Brittany, at 20.3 meters or about 60 feet tall. Instead, it lays broken into 4 pieces near the Carnac mound of Er-Grah.

Pierres Plats Passage Grave, Locmariaquer, Morbihan, Brittany

This passage grave is right off the beach. It has 13 decorated uprights. I only saw one, I was afriad to go inside, the roof may collapse.....well anyway, it had just finished sleeting and there were puddles and mud.

Lagatjar Rows, Camaret sur Mer, Finestere, Brittany

This site was the last stop on a really wonderful day in Western Brittany. These rows have 2 parallel rows and 1 set at right angles to each other, like TT. There is also a separate row of 3 stones. There are around 100 stones left here. Many have been taken over the centuries for use in the walls, roads and buildings of the nearby town.

Saint Just, Brittany

There is a park that has a path you can follow for miles, that takes from site to site. Many sites have been restored. Some are fenced. A real nice walk. (I walked for several hours to see all the sites).
